For generations there has existed a footway linking between Whitchurch and Radyr, crossing the river Taff by a bridge near Melingriffith Tinplate Works. References occur in Melingriffith Accounts for 1786-7 to repairs carried out to this bridge, which was known as 'Red Bridge,' a name which still applies to the present day railway bridge. When the Taff Vale railway bridge was constructed (1835-40) the old footbridge seems to have been demolished, but pedestrians continued to use the footpath and crossed the river by trespassing on the railway property. Ref: Old Whitchurch by Edgar L. Chappell. The video was filmed in November 2020.
