Описание: BREAKING NEWS: Police in Spain announced the shocking results of a major operation to dismantle an Armenia mafia network involved in large-scale rigging of tennis by implicating 83 suspects — 28 of them professional players. And it wasn’t just fringe players. One competed in the last U.S. Open.
Authorities say the mobsters using a professional tennis player as their intermediary to contact and bribe professional players into fixing the results of specific matches. Once a player agreed to ensure a specific result, beefy members of the Armenian mob attended the matches and made sure they were noticed — as a visible reminder not to back out. Once everything was in place, word went out to their network to initiate the mass placing of the appropriate winning bets, nationally and internationally, much of it online. They’ve been doing it since at least the beginning of 2017, generating millions of euros in profits.
On Thursday, heavily armed police made simultaneous raids on 11 homes across Spain. 15 people were arrested, including the alleged heads of the ring.
It is likely linked to another operation in Spain in June also targeting the Armenian mob and also involving rigged tennis matches. Police at the time said they arrested six “vors,” members of the “vor v zakone” — the name for high-ranking “thieves-in-law” of the Eastern European underworld.
