Main rules:

Placement based on student strength:

Cooks are appointed in schools on the basis of the number of students. One cook can be appointed for up to 25 students, two cooks for 26 to 100 students, and so on up to seven cooks for more than 1501 students.   

Parents Preference:

In the selection of cooks, preference is given to the parents of children studying in the concerned school.   

Selection by Gram Panchayat Committee/Ward Committee:

Cooks are selected by the Gram Panchayat Committee or Ward Committee.   

Preference to women of special category:

Preference is given to widows, destitute, and divorced women.   

Renewal on satisfactory service:

If the service of the cooks is satisfactory, they are renewed.   

Removal procedure:

For removal of cooks, a procedure is followed based on investigation and evidence by the Gram Panchayat Committee or Ward Committee, and removal cannot be done arbitrarily.   

Minimum Wages:

Cooks should be paid minimum wages, and instructions for this are issued from time to time.   

Food Safety and Hygiene:

Cooks also have to take care of food preparation and kitchen hygiene.   

Honorarium:

Cooks are paid an honorarium, and this is also increased from time to time.   

It is important to note that these regulations primarily refer to the mid-day meal scheme, and govern the appointment and working conditions of cooks.
