If you are buying a house or own a home built in the 70’s, 80’s or 90’s with city water that has a blue plastic pipe, it may be P-B, Polybutylene.
City water source piping for residential homes have only been around for over just 100 years. These pipes are not all the same. Some are made of metals and some of plastic. Some of these pipes used have problems, such as the topic in the video. P-B is the term used for Polybutylene plastic. This plastic pipe is typically the color blue, grey or black. The resin of the plastic that was manufactured approximately from 1978-1995 had been known to fail. The failure includes splitting & bursting resulting in lack of pressure to a residential home and then no water pressure at all. This leaves the home owner unexpectedly with no potable water.
When these residential homes were built, the P-B material was the option for installation from the city. As consumers were experiencing this unfortunate situation a class action lawsuit was formed for the consumers. Residential home owners are responsible for the fee of replacing the pipe. This can be a very costly expense, $2500 - $4500 depending on the distance and obstructions the plumber has to work with.
The consumer plumbing recovery center has issued out notices of a class action lawsuit pertaining to these materials that were installed on residential homes between 1978 – 1995.
This class action lawsuit included other plastic plumbing pipes that were more commonly installed in mobile homes and manufactured homes.
The notice is directed to individuals who purchased a house, mobile or manufactured home in the United States after September 12th 1999 that contained plumbing composed of Polybutylene pipe.
