When a cruise ship emergency happens, getting passengers safely off a high deck is a major challenge. This marine evacuation system uses a vertical escape chute to provide a controlled route down to life rafts.

The system deploys from a stowage unit on the embarkation deck. An orange fabric tube extends down the side of the ship and connects with inflated life rafts below. Passengers enter feet-first or in a controlled seated position, while handprints inside help guide their movement.

Inside the chute, friction surfaces, internal baffles, or a helical design can control the descent speed, helping passengers reach the rafts without free-falling. The system is designed for dry-shod evacuation, meaning passengers can transfer directly to the life rafts without entering the water.

Marine Evacuation Systems (MES) can be particularly useful on vessels with high freeboard because they deploy quickly and can be stored compactly. Large systems are designed for rapid mass evacuation and are used alongside established ship-safety procedures.

MES equipment is manufactured by companies such as Viking and Survitec. Crew members also conduct regular training and demonstrations so they understand how the system works during an emergency.
