Jaishankar Speaks to Rubio on Trade, Defence and Energy Cooperation

The call comes at a sensitive moment for India-US relations, which have been under strain following President Donald Trump’s decision to impose steep tariffs on Indian goods.

India currently faces duties of up to 50 percent on certain exports to the United States, including a punitive levy linked to purchases of Russian oil. Despite multiple rounds of negotiations last year, a long-pending bilateral trade deal remains unresolved, largely due to Washington’s push for greater access to India’s farm and dairy sectors.

The timing of the call is also significant as Trump announced a 25 percent tariff on countries doing business with Iran. Indian government sources have downplayed the impact, noting that India-Iran trade is under $2 billion and accounts for just 0.15 percent of India’s total trade.

With both sides reaffirming engagement, the Jaishankar-Rubio call signals an effort to keep strategic channels open amid growing trade and geopolitical uncertainty.
