Learn how to drain water from your kayak with a closer look at the scupper plug function: scupper holes and scupper plugs - what they do and what they're for.
In this demonstration from Brooklyn Kayak Company, we've filled up a BKC kayak with water. If left unattended in the rain, it would probably sink due to water build-up.
As soon as you remove one of the scupper plugs, the water will immediately start to drain out. And as the water drains out, you'll even see the kayak rising in the water.
Scupper functions:
easily drains water from the inside of the kayak
if in rough conditions, and you're below the suggested weight capacity, you should ride with the scuppers out
if it's a calm day/ride, and you'd like to stay dry, no problem to keep the scuppers in - it builds up additional weight capacity
there are scuppers throughout the kayak for ample drainage
if you leave your kayak in the water, remove the scuppers to help drain any standing rain water inside the kayak
