In her solo exhibition, the contemporary artist—who lives in Seattle when she’s not traveling through the solar system—draws on childhood memories and emotions to create an atmosphere exploding with color, pop art, and disco balls.

From massive glass ball barrettes to an illuminated wall portal, Waters’ installations transform the gallery into a space-age fantasy that evokes curiosity and elicits thoughtful reflection. Follow along as Waters discusses what it was like growing up in the 1980s, how she incorporates family into her practice, why imagination is paramount for the next generation, and much more.

Waters is the winner of the 2023 Betty Bowen Award, an annual juried award that honors a PNW-based artist with a cash prize and solo exhibition at SAM.
