Throughout the history of cancer treatment, doctors and scientists have come up with different lines of attack: excision through surgery, often leaving cancer cells behind; succumbing the body with chemical warfare via chemotherapy; exposing it to radiation — but it now appears that maybe the answer was within our bodies this entire time.
That’s where immunotherapy enters the picture. Scientists and clinicians have harnessed the human immune system — the body’s natural defense mechanism — to identify and attack cancer cells. But what’s next for immunotherapy, and can it scale up to the necessary level to be more accessible to cancer patients?
David Chang, President, Co-Founder, and CEO of Allogene; Alex Marson, Associate Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at UCSF and Scientific Director of Biomedicine at the Innovative Genomics Institute; and Sara Nayeem, Partner at New Enterprise Associates, joined The Atlantic’s Ross Andersen to discuss.
