Former President Barack Obama's vision of keeping China in check through a large regional trade agreement with North American and Pacific countries led to the negotiation of the Transpacific Partnership (TPP) with 12 member countries. The Trump administration withdrew from the agreement, but the remaining countries moved on and ratified the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Transpacific Partnership (CPTPP), which entered into force on December 30, 2018.
Several countries have applied for CPTPP membership, and the trading bloc completed negotiations with the United Kingdom in March this year. What role is the CPTPP playing in the Pacific region, and how is it affecting global trade? Will the United States ever join?
