Policy & Practice: China’s economic diplomacy

Описание: 2023 marked the ten-year anniversary of China’s ambitious Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), a global infrastructure development strategy that has strengthened China’s trade and investment linkages across large swathes of the globe. It is a centrepiece of Xi Jinping's foreign policy strategy of “Major Country Diplomacy with Chinese Characteristics”, which calls for China to assume a greater leadership role in global affairs in accordance with its rising power and status. In this seminar, leading experts will analyse China's economic diplomacy over this period, exploring its implications for key regions—including Asia, Europe, and Africa—and for the international order.

Meet the speakers -

Diana Choyleva is a leading expert on China’s economy and politics. She is Chief Economist at Enodo Economics, an independent macroeconomic and political forecasting company she set up in 2016 to assess China and its global impact. She has analysed China since 2000 and has co-authored three books. She is a Non-executive Director at JPMorgan Asia Growth and Income plc and a non-resident Senior Fellow at the Asia Society Policy Institute’s Center for China Analysis, focusing on the Chinese economy.

Dr Yu Jie is senior research fellow on China at Chatham House, focusing on the decision-making process of Chinese foreign policy as well as China’s economic diplomacy. She frequently comments in major media outlets such as BBC News and the Financial Times and regularly briefs senior policy practitioners from the G20 members. She also advises major FTSE 100 corporates and leading European financial institutions on China’s political landscape. She is a Young Leader for the Asian Security Summit Shangri-La Dialogue.

Dr Giulia Sciorati is a Fellow at the Department of International Relations at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Her research focuses on questions of immaterial power and states’ image-building, investigating (visual) narratives and the instrumentalisation of shared memory in diplomacy. Empirically, her work has primarily focused on China’s self-representations to Global South audiences through cultural products such as documentaries and museum exhibitions.
