Too busy to fuss with complicated dyeing techniques? In this video, I demonstrate a super easy way of creating a dramatic hemline by letting color soak up into a garment. Just mix up the liquid color, and let osmosis do the work. This technique is also known as ombre, dip, or gradient dyeing.

The supply list for this project is a little long. If you need help sourcing things, feel free to post your questions at / community and get group feedback.
NOTE: Any equipment used in the dyeing process is no longer suitable for food use
To make this project, you’ll need:
a garment made from 100% natural plant fibers (e.g. cotton, hemp, bamboo, flax, linen, rayon) that has been prepared for dyeing by washing it in Textile Detergent and rinsing it without the use of fabric softener. If the garment is machine dried, then no dryer sheet should be used.
Professional Textile Detergent / Synthrapol®
Retayne® dye fixative
Soda ash (Sodium Carbonate) (this is not baking soda)
Fiber reactive powdered dye (such as Procion® designed for 100% natural plant fibers)
large (at least 2 gallon) plastic tub with lid (to store soda ash solution, which will stay effective for about 6 months)
1-cup measure (for measuring powdered soda ash & water)
1 tbsp measuring spoon (for measuring powdered dye & mixing liquid dye)
Long handled plastic stirring spoon (for mixing soda ash solution)
Dust mask (for preparing soda ash solution, and handling powdered dye)
Rubber gloves
Plastic garbage bag & an old towel (to protect floor)
Garment rack
Hangers
Shallow narrow plastic container (to hold liquid dye)
Before dyeing, soak the garment in a solution of 1 cup soda ash to 1 gallon water for at least 10 minutes. After dyeing, rinse the garment until the water runs clear. Then wash it in hot water using textile detergent, rinse in cold, then send it through the cold rinse cycle again, with a sploosh of Retayne in the water this time. Tumble dry, wear and enjoy.
