Born Eli Sanford to a family of traveling performers, Quarter Brown would legally change his name after his father’s passing in 1960. “That old bast*ard was a Tyrant,” Brown’s brother Sonny Sanford said in an interview he was hours late for. “But my brother got it the worst. He liked to say ‘this family is about dollars and you ain’t worth a quarter.’ But my brother’s got more talent in his little finger than in the whole of that miserable sack of sh*t.”

Quarter Brown would link up with a small Detroit doo wop group in 1961, shifting their musical direction and securing a record deal. Though after touring their first release, some of Brown’s wardrobe choices began to make the band uncomfortable. “Look, genius comes at a cost,” Willy Fontaine of The Dollar Thrills noted. “Quarter just…he wanted to be free, you get me? He dressed the bare minimum. Meanin’ mostly bare and barely minimum. You can’t perform like that on stage. And definitely not on TV. Maybe in the 70s but we never made it that far.”

Unable to keep a group together or perform live, Quarter Brown would spend most of the late 60s and early 70s producing classics from The Gleeful Dreamers, The Middle 3, Julius Orange and The Pulp, Freddy And The Shore Trotters, Linda Ferrari, among others including his brother Sonny Sanford. Finally, in 1976 a slightly older, slightly fiercer Quarter Brown would emerge and once again expose his unique brand of soul to the public.
