A rattleback is a curious object that has a preferred rotation direction. If spun in its non-preferred direction, the rattleback will begin to "rattle" (or rock), then reverse direction. The rattleback rotates freely in its preferred direction. In the following video, we will first check for the preferred direction by tapping down on one end of the rattleback. This rattleback has a preferred counter-clockwise rotation. Next, we will try to rotate it clockwise, but, the rattleback will resist this action quickly reversing to its preferred direction. Finally, we will try to rotate it a few more times in both directions.
There is no simple answer to explain the physics of the rattleback, there are a number of detailed scientific papers written on the subject. However, the mechanical properties of the rattleback are relatively simple. The center of mass is offset from the geometric axis.
