The Gold-Digging Mouse of Himachal
In the high mountains of Himachal, lives a unique creature - the Himalayan Marmot, often called the “gold-digging mouse.”
Unlike ordinary mice, this animal is larger - somewhere between a squirrel and a rabbit - measuring up to 70 cm in length and weighing nearly 9 kg. With its strong claws and bushy tail, it digs deep burrows that can stretch 6–9 meters underground.
Experts say the soil thrown out from these burrows sometimes carries tiny gold particles, as Himalayan and Tibetan soils naturally contain gold dust. That’s why locals often collect this soil.
During winters, marmots hibernate for 6–8 months, surviving only on their stored body fat. In Ladakh and Tibet, they are even seen as symbols of hard work, luck, and prosperity in Buddhist culture.
Truly, one of the most fascinating creatures of the Himalayas!
