Whether it’s shopping your closet, thrifting, shopping online from ThredUp or Poshmark, or taking care of the clothes you currently have by mending or upcycling, there are so many ways for us to live a more sustainable lifestyle from our closet.

Navigating the world of sustainable fashion can be really confusing, since practically every company claims to be sustainable. So while we’re focused on making changes to our wardrobe so we can live a little more sustainably, it’s important for us to remember why we’re ultimately choosing sustainable fashion over fast fashion brands.

One of the ways we can do that is by continuing to ask questions and research fashion brands. We need to dig past any greenwashing and shop with brands whose practices are transparent and align with our values. Because ultimately, whenever we buy anything, we are literally voting with our dollars and we’re telling them that we’re okay with whatever their business practices are.

I want to offer a disclaimer that I’m in no way condemning anyone who works at fast fashion brands. There’s a lot of work that needs to be done from the top and I believe that those changes can be influenced by the choices we make that send the message of the urgency of sustainable and ethical business practices.

I also want to say that I don’t believe that thrift stores such as Goodwill are completely unsustainable. It’s always best to support local businesses to benefit your local economies, and that’s what I really want to encourage when it comes to donating unwanted clothes and thrifted secondhand items.
