Lachner wrote this string quintet in c minor at Vienna in April 1834 for a string quintet with additional double bass. Before he gave it to the publisher as his Op. 121 in 1866, he revised the quintet thoroughly and replaced the double bass by a second cello. However, we, as editor (Verlag Walter Wollenweber), did not remove the musical revisions Lachner made. Furthermore, at some places, where Lachner in his revision used the removal of the coupling of both bass parts in octaves to introduce additional contrapuntal elements in the now free part, this musically richer version was retained.
-Prof. W. Sawodny (Verlag Walter Wollenweber)
The version that we propose here, namely the original with double bass, is based on the Verlag Walter Wollenweber version (described above) with some minor changes, with the aim of remaining as faithful as possible to the manuscript. This manuscript from 1834 is available on the IMSLP website: https://imslp.org/wiki/String_Quintet...)
