Watching the Turnagain Arm Bore Tide

Although this bore tide (Aug 1, 2023) was on the smaller side, it was really amazing to watch the tide rush in like a fast river. The setting is gorgeous too, and at each spot that we watched it, the water was doing something slightly different. The most dramatic was where the surfers were - there was a big whirlpool, but by the time I got out with my camera, it had pretty much stopped.
These bore tides can be seen best around full and new moons, and the really large ones are rarer to see. If you're in the Anchorage area, I highly recommend getting out and watching for these. There are websites that list when they are most likely to occur, and you couldn't ask for a more beautiful setting to just hang out and watch the water changing.
This was our second attempt to observe the bore tide. The first one, despite being at a time likely to see the bore, was not as obvious.
The Turnagain Arm is the traditional land of the Dena’ina Ełnena and Dënéndeh people.
