Curious about how metal hydrides work, and how REMEDHYS is turning them into a practical hydrogen storage solution?
We’re starting a new interview series to introduce the people behind REMEDHYS: the researchers and engineers explaining what they are working on and why it matters.
We begin with Stefano Deledda, Senior Scientist at the Institute for Energy Technology and Coordinator of the REMEDHYS. In the interview, Stefano explains the core idea behind the project: using metal hydrides to store hydrogen safely, at low pressure, and under conditions suitable for real-world applications.
💬 “Storing hydrogen in metal hydrides is inherently safe, because it does not require high pressures or very low temperatures, as is the case for compressed or liquid hydrogen. Hydrogen can be stored at relatively low pressure and ambient temperature, which reduces safety distances and simplifies infrastructure requirements. This opens up new possibilities for deploying hydrogen storage closer to where it is actually needed.”
He also highlights how REMEDHYS combines materials research and system-level design, including the use of recycled and scrap metals sourced in the EU, to reduce costs and support a circular economy approach. The project’s demonstration site in Cuxhaven will play a key role in showing that metal hydride storage can work reliably at large scale in operational conditions.
