Covering an area of 141 square kilometers, the archipelago collectively forms Penghu County. In 2011, Penghu was chosen by Lonely Planet as one of its top 10 island paradises and listed as having one of the most beautiful bays in the world by a UNESCO-backed non-governmental organization. These achievements brought the islands to the attention of travelers looking for new places to visit, according to tourism officials.
