Описание: Kortrijk is one of the oldest cities in Belgium. In the first century AD, Kortrijk emerged as the Gallo-Roman vicus Cortoriacum . This settlement was located at the intersection of the heirbaan Boulogne-Tongeren and the heirbaan Doornik - Oudenburg and along the banks of the Lys. In 1950, excavations brought to light Roman finds from which experts concluded that the Romans used Kortrijk as a base for the conquest of Britain in 43 AD.

The Broeltorens date from the 14th (the Speytorre) and 15th century (Inghelburghtorre). The towers are a remnant of old fortifications destroyed by Louis XIV in 1684. Both towers served to protect the bridge between them. Accompanied by a guide you can visit the famous Broeltorens from the inside, more info at Tourism Kortrijk.

The Broel Bridge was opened in 1385 but had to be repaired several times in its history after destruction. Since 1913, the statue of Saint John Nepomucenus, patron saint of the drowned , has been standing on top of the Broeltoren Bridge.

The Leie quays were recently lowered and the car parks on both sides of the Leie have disappeared. The cars make way for water recreation, rest benches, children's entertainment. In a manner of speaking you can relax here today and on a warm summer day put your feet in the water from the banks of the Leie.

This renovation on the edge of the old city center gives the core of the city a different dimension. It is a nice place that is popular with both young and old to relax or sit on a terrace during the summer. It is also the ideal place to take some nice pictures near one of the most famous spots of the city.

The Church of Our Lady was originally a chapel of the castle of Kortrijk. Then the church was in the middle of a site with a fortress and a moat, surrounded by a rampart wall. In the early 13th century a canon's church was built by order of Baldwin of Constantinople . When you enter the church, you can read on the wall that Guido Gezelle was a chaplain here in the second half of the 19th century. In the park next to the church you can still find the bust of the famous poet.

The top attraction of this church is undoubtedly the Counts' Chapel, which is located behind a glass wall . Between 1370 and 1371, this chapel was built on the model of the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris as a mausoleum for Count of Flanders Louis van Male, but in the end the count is not buried here.
