How to be grifting guava with big tree.
Grafting a guava tree is a great way to produce better fruit, preserve a specific variety, and speed up fruiting. Here's a simple step-by-step guide to graft a guava tree:
🌱 Materials Needed:
Healthy guava rootstock (seedling)
Scion wood (branch from a mature guava tree with good fruit)
Sharp grafting knife or blade
Grafting tape or plastic strip
Clean cloth and rubbing alcohol (for disinfecting)
✂️ Step-by-Step Grafting Process:
1. Choose the Right Time
Best time: Late spring to early summer when the plant is actively growing.
2. Select Rootstock
Use a healthy young guava plant (6–12 months old, about the thickness of a pencil).
It should be disease-free and well-rooted.
3. Select Scion
Cut a young but mature branch (6–10 cm long) from a guava tree with desirable fruit.
The scion should have 2–3 healthy buds and be similar in thickness to the rootstock.
4. Prepare the Rootstock
Cut the top of the rootstock off horizontally.
Make a vertical cut down the center of the top (about 2–3 cm deep) — this is for cleft grafting.
5. Prepare the Scion
Cut the base of the scion into a V-shape to fit into the cleft of the rootstock.
6. Join and Secure
Insert the V-shaped scion into the cleft on the rootstock so the cambium layers (green inner bark) touch.
Wrap tightly with grafting tape or plastic to hold it securely.
7. Protect and Wait
Place a plastic bag or plastic bottle over the graft to maintain humidity.
Keep the plant in indirect sunlight and water regularly.
New growth should appear in 2–4 weeks if successful.
✅ Tips for Success:
Use clean, sharp tools to avoid infection.
Align the cambium layers carefully; this is key to success.
Label the graft if you’re doing many at once.
