As reported Ukrainian drones struck four Su-34 fighter jets at the Marinovka airfield in Russia's Volgograd Oblast overnight on June 27, Ukraine's General Staff said.
The operation was carried out by the Special Forces and the Security Service of Ukraine in cooperation with other military units, according to the General Staff.
Volgograd Oblast is located some 900 kilometers southeast of Moscow.
According to preliminary data, two Russian fighter jets were destroyed, and the other two were damaged. Russia uses such aircraft to bomb Ukraine, particularly to drop guided aerial bombs, the General Staff said. The attack also caused a fire in the airfield's technical and operational unit, a facility where combat aircraft are serviced and repaired, according to the General Staff.
Recall, as Russia intensifies aerial attacks on Ukraine and the civilian death toll climbs, Ukraine has stepped up its drone attacks on Russian territory. The recent surge in drone strikes aims to disrupt airport operations, overwhelm air defenses, and mount pressure against the Russian population.
The General Staff recalled that Russian Su-34s are the main tactical aircraft that carry out missile and bomb strikes on Ukrainian positions and populated areas. In the Russian Aerospace Forces, they are classified as frontline fighter-bombers. They are used, in particular, to drop guided aerial bombs, including those with planning and correction modules:
"The extent of damage to enemy aircraft and the results of the defeat are being clarified," the General Staff noted.
Using open source investigations, Slashgear estimated that Russia has lost 38 of the 163 Su-34 fighter jets since the beginning of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. If the new reports of four destroyed Su-34 bombers are confirmed, this would bring the number of Su-34 bombers that Russia has from 163 to 121, a nearly 26% loss of this class of warplane. According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, since the beginning of the full-scale war, the Russian Federation has lost 416 aircraft and 337 helicopters in Ukraine.
Ukrainian forces have been systematically attacking military bases on Russian territory; just last month, the Kubinka airfield in the Moscow region , where Su-27 and MiG-29 are based, came under attack.
In addition, important enterprises of the military-industrial complex of the aggressor country were attacked at that time. In Saransk, the fiber-optic systems plant, which specializes in the production of fiber-optic cables and communication systems for the Russian army, was seriously damaged. The Shaikovka airfield in the Kaluga region , where Tu-22M3s are based and missiles, in particular the Kh-22, are stored, was also hit .
