Why does the Columbia River cut directly through the Cascade Range instead of going around it?
The Columbia River Gorge looks inevitable once you see it. A massive river, a canyon, two walls of rock guiding wind, weather, roads, rail, and people between the Pacific coast and the interior Northwest. But geologically, this shouldn’t exist. Rivers usually avoid rising mountain ranges. The Columbia didn’t.
