Wayfinders #3: dominant OA models revisited

Описание: OASPA’s wayfinders series brings to life practical case-studies helping all organisations find ways to increase equity in open access (OA). Our third wayfinders session picked up where wayfinders #2 left off and continues to look at the journeys of publishing organisations that are (or were) delivering OA through per-publication charges. Wayfinders #3 collects views from those improving or iterating on per-publication charge models, as well as those evolving away from such charges. We hear about:

Earlier this year, the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) presented plans for moving towards a fully OA future and developing non-APC based models. The RSC presentation within this OASPA webinar from April 2024 is a further example and resource in the context of our Wayfinders #3 discussion.

Biographies

Chair:

Malavika Legge (OASPA)

Malavika is OASPA’s Program Manager, leading projects that support OASPA’s mission. She previously led an open-science agenda as Publishing Director at the Biochemical Society, and was elected to the first Council of the Society Publishers’ Coalition (SocPC) in 2019, going on to serve as its Chair from 2020 to 2023. Starting her publishing career at Informa Healthcare, she has a breadth of editorial, publishing technology, sales and licensing experience. Malavika dreams of a world where scholarly publishing is open access publishing – by default, for everyone. She is author of the OASPA series on Equity in OA.


Panelists:

Matt Giampoala, American Geophysical Union

Matt Giampoala serves as the Vice President for Publications for the American Geophysical Union (AGU) where he oversees its journals, books, and preprint programs. Matt has led efforts in expanding access and engagement through open science and reproducibility initiatives and is an advocate for promoting equity and inclusion in scholarly publishing. Matt has a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.


John Edwards, PLOS

John Edwards is Head of Sales Operations at PLOS. He is responsible for the strategic development of institutional business models, as well as the operational infrastructure required to support their success. Prior to working at PLOS, John worked for Cambridge University Press, most recently successfully leading transition and growth for the organization’s open research business in the Americas.


Nick Lindsay, The MIT Press

Nick Lindsay has worked for The MIT Press since 2008 where he leads both the journals division and the Press’ open access efforts. He’s focused on developing new titles and business models to support the Press and has worked extensively with scholarly societies, university departments, and others on innovative journal projects, including Rapid Reviews: Infectious Diseases.


Susan Murray, African Journals Online/AJOL

From an academic background of Development Economics and previous Non Profit training organisation work experience, Susan Murray has been the Executive Director of African Journals OnLine (AJOL) since 2010, and its Manager for 3 years before that. She has grown AJOL from a short online list of some African peer-reviewed journals to a large full text online platform (using Free and Open Source software) of rigorously assessed and supported African research journals. AJOL now provides various services to millions of people within the continent and around the world.
