Here is the backstory that hangs over every second of this reunion. 20 years prior. Moiraine ran away from her royal family in Cairhien to join the White Tower and become an Aes Sedai. she left without a single word of explanation. without a single letter in the decades that followed. when her older brother the King of Cairhien was assassinated. the entire House Damodred was left on the brink of destruction. and it was 17 year old Anvaere. Moiraine’s baby sister. who was left to hold the family together. she navigated the brutal cutthroat political games of Cairhien for 20 years. she made sacrifices she never wanted to make. all to keep her family alive and in power. while Moiraine never once reached out to check on her.

Moiraine and Lan arrive in Cairhien. and we see the weight of this history hit Moiraine immediately. she admits to Lan that she never reached out to her sister all those years not out of cruelty. but out of fear. from the day she became an Aes Sedai. she has been fighting the Dark One and his forces. and she was terrified that even a single letter to her family would bring the Dark One’s wrath down on House Damodred. she thought cutting off all contact was the only way to protect the only family she had left. by the end of the episode. with the Forsaken already hunting for Rand in the city. Moiraine has no other choice. she swallows her pride and her guilt. and walks through the doors of the House Damodred estate for the first time in 20 years.

For the first time in the series. Moiraine drops the calm unshakable mask of an Aes Sedai. she tells Anvaere the real reason she never reached out. she was not running from her family. she was trying to protect them. she knew the path she was on was a death sentence. and she was terrified that any connection to her would paint a target on Anvaere and the rest of the family. her silence was not abandonment. it was the only way she knew to keep her baby sister safe.

Anvaere finally agrees to help. she gives Moiraine full access to House Damodred’s entire intelligence network. but she makes one non negotiable demand. Moiraine must promise to keep Barthanes out of this war. to keep him safe. no matter what. Moiraine makes that promise. and with Anvaere’s network. she finally locks in Rand’s location. he is hiding in a mental asylum in Cairhien. pretending to be mad to avoid the Forsaken’s search. the episode closes with a quiet moment. as Moiraine prepares to leave the estate. Anvaere stands on the stairs and tells her to come back alive sister. the 20 year rift between them has finally started to heal.



the character of Anvaere Damodred is entirely original to the show. in the original books. Moiraine has no living younger sister. her only direct blood relative is her older brother Taringail Damodred. the former King of Cairhien. there is no Anvaere in the book canon at all. the show created this character entirely to flesh out Moiraine’s backstory. her family trauma. and her complicated relationship with her home and her duty.

the character of Barthanes Damodred has been completely reworked for the show. in the original books. Barthanes is a distant cousin of Moiraine’s. a powerful Cairhien noble and a Darkfriend. in the show. he is reimagined as Anvaere’s biological son. Moiraine’s direct nephew. this change was made to ramp up the emotional stakes of the storyline. to tie the Dark One’s plot directly to Moiraine’s family.
