Waddling wellness: Michigan zoo's Magellanic penguins receive annual health exams

Описание: All 24 Magellanic penguins at John Ball Zoo spent Thursday moving through their yearly health checkup, a full physical exam that helps zookeepers monitor each bird’s wellbeing and catch potential health issues early.

The zoo performs the exams once a year, giving veterinarians and animal care staff a chance to evaluate everything from bloodwork to joint movement.

“This is our annual penguin exam,” said Dan Hemmann, curator at John Ball Zoo. “Every penguin gets a physical visit by our vet. We check beaks, nails, bands, and every penguin has their blood drawn so we can check their values and make sure they’re healthy.”

Throughout the morning, each penguin moves between several stations. Staff begin by weighing the birds and trimming any overgrown beaks or nails.
