How to relax the pelvic floor

The tension we hold throughout our bodies has a HUGE impact on the pelvic floor. Relaxing the jaw, the shoulders, the belly, the butt, the feet... all of it impacts the muscles of the pelvic floor. This is why in yoga classes, I'm always reminding students to relax these muscles. I've been doing yoga for 20+ years and find I still hold tension in the body when I practice. It's just something we do, and for someone with pelvic floor dysfunction, especially someone with pelvic pain, this added tension makes the pelvic floor symptoms worse.
The next time you feel tense, try to release your muscles. When you're stressed, remember to release your jaw and breathe to relax the belly. You'll be amazed how much of an impact that small act can have on how you feel.
