December 3, 2004 (LOUISVILLE, Ky.) -- The Belfry Pirates cemented themselves in the history books as back-to-back state champions with a 28-21 win over Owensboro Catholic.
Doug Howard leading the Pirates' punishing ground game with 32 carries for 278 yards and three touchdowns. His running mate David Jones helped Belfry grab the gold with 27 rushes for 176 yards and another score.
The win placing Belfry in rare company in the annals of high school football in the mountains. The Pirates becoming the fourth team from Eastern Kentucky to repeat as champions.
