The British economy is teetering on the brink. Beneath it lies a deep fiscal hole, created by billions of pounds of unfunded spending – never-ending health promises, a spiralling welfare bill and a triple lock on the state pension which will cost three times as much as originally estimated. Then there is the crushing burden of debt interest, which costs twice the defence budget, pulling the nation closer to financial collapse.
In the magazine this week, economics editor Michael Simmons argues that it's the Bank of England and its governor Andrew Bailey who are to blame for 'wrecking the economy'. He discusses with deputy US editor Kate Andrews and Vicky Pryce, former joint head of the United Kingdom's Government Economic Service.
