Lucerne (Medicago sativa) is an important fodder crop of Pakistan. Being an aridity tolerant, perennial and rich in protein fodder, alfalfa or lucerne is very popular among farmers especially of arid and semi-arid parts of the country. Weeds especially parasitic dodder (Cuscuta campestris) is an important bottleneck in the way of successful fodder and seed crop production.
Dodder (Cuscuta campestris) is a common problem throughout the world. In Pakistan it is mostly spread through seed. Poor quality seed of lucerne mixed with dodder seed is the major source of its dissemination. Dodder seed free Lucerne is the most important suggestion to avoid dodder infestation.
It is a perennial parasitic weed but its germination and growth is mostly associated with spring season alike environmental conditions as in October-November and February-March in our country. It may be partly be managed through manual operations but it is very difficult to control and chemical control is suggested in case of large scale.
In this video, we have advised the Lucerne farmers to spray flumetsulam @ 7.5 gram per acre with 100 liter of water within a period of 2-3 weeks after sowing. In case of severe infestation, a single spray of pendimethalin 33EC @ 1000 ml per acre with 100 liter of water after a cutting.
