Описание: Kenilworth Castle goes right back to the 1120s, founded by Geoffrey de Clinton under Henry I. It was later turned into a serious fortress, with King John adding major defences and a huge lake that protected the walls. In 1266 it even survived a 172-day siege — one of the longest in medieval England. But its real glamour era came in Tudor times, when Elizabeth I’s favourite, Robert Dudley, transformed it into a showpiece and hosted the Queen here in 1575 for her longest stay with any courtier. After the Civil War it was deliberately damaged, leaving the dramatic ruins we see today — later made famous all over again by Sir Walter Scott’s novel Kenilworth.
