The Stahl House - Case Study House #22 - A Once-in-a-Lifetime Architectural Offering

Over the years, the family has allowed me to guide highly coveted private twilight tours for clients, colleagues, and friends. Being able to share the home with hundreds has been one of the great privileges of my career, and something I will always be grateful to them for. Time and again, I see that many arrive knowing the Stahl House only through the iconic Julius Shulman photograph — considered the most downloaded image of a residential home in history.

This short capsule was created for the family, yet they are graciously allowing it to be shared with the world. In doing so, we hope it reaches the individual who will appreciate the legacy of this house and assume the role of its next custodian.

From its earliest conception, the home was shaped by a simple but remarkable request. When Mr. Stahl approached Pierre Koenig, he asked for a house where he could look to the mountains in the east and the ocean in the west with nothing more than a turn of his head. Koenig responded with a structure so precise and so daring that it became one of modern architecture’s defining silhouettes.

Though brief in length, this aerial perspective reveals the brilliance of its siting: any higher in the Hollywood Hills and the panorama is lost; any lower and you’re absorbed into the Sunset Strip. Positioned exactly on the Los Angeles grid, the house occupies the only point where Koenig’s vision makes sense in a way no other site could.

When the family saw this vantage point, it stirred memories, family, pride, and the weight of more than 60 years of stewardship.
Their reaction is something I’ll carry with me.
