Did you know that the Battle of Kulikovo in 1380 was the first step toward Rus breaking free from Mongol rule?
On September 8, 1380, Dmitry Donskoy’s forces faced Mamai’s army on the Kulikovo Field. The Rus army numbered about 50,000 warriors, while the Mongol forces were up to 60,000.
The turning point came when a hidden ambush regiment, led by Dmitry Bobrok, emerged from the forest and struck the Mongols from behind. This surprise attack changed the course of the battle.
The victory at Kulikovo proved that the Mongols could be defeated. Although the Mongol yoke lasted for nearly a century more, this battle inspired Rus to continue its fight for independence.
