Habits, patterns, and routine:
I invite you to think about habits and patterns. Therapists, behavior analyst, etc. always have a number they say that turns the activity into a habit - something that is set in your routine. Think about any mindless or serious goal you might have set for yourself or family. Perhaps you set a goal of doing laundry every Thursday night. Perhaps you set a goal of studying math everyday. Perhaps you set a goal of having dinner every Sunday at 6pm. Perhaps you set a goal to be off the iPad or Tablet by 9:30pm every night. Whatever, anything. Now think about how you’ve actually lived the past 2 weeks, what you’ve actually accomplished. Really accomplished, real tasks with productivity. Be honest. Now think about how you’ve actually lived the past month. What did you actually accomplish? If you are having a hard time honestly analyzing, remembering, or coming up with something, then I invite you to fill out the practice chart.
With our musical relationship, it is very clear to me how truly productive you are with practicing. It shows in your playing. It shows in your mannerisms. It shows in your editorial comments after you play something for me.
In order to get past a bad habit, you must erase it from you mind and routine. That takes a lot of effort! You then have to rewrite the new habit you would like to instill. That takes consistent practice. Your next 2 weeks has a high chance of being similar to your past 2 weeks. You have to assess and see if you’re okay with that. If not, please practice and change.
