Excavated in Sri Lanka, the Sri Lankan lion (Panthera leo sinhaleyus), often called the Ceylonese lion, is an extinct prehistoric subspecies of lion. It is thought to have gone extinct around 37,000 years BC, before the arrival of culturally modern humans. Only two teeth discovered in deposits at Kuruwita provide information about this lion. P. Deraniyagala suggested this subspecies in 1939 based on these teeth. On the other hand, not enough is known to establish how it might be different from other lion subspecies.
