World Food Programme (WFP), the United Nations (UN) food assistance organization, has confirmed a major “scale-up” of food aid being delivered to famine-struck Sudan, amid conflict with the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
WFP’s spokesperson for Sudan, Leni Kinzli, revealed that more than 700 trucks are on their way to 14 areas of the African country, offering roughly 17,500 tons worth of food aid, which was estimated to have the capacity to feed “about 1.5 million people for a month.”
“People in the camp are resorting to extreme measures to survive because food is so scarce,” Kinzli said. “Families are eating crushed peanut shells, which are usually used as animal fodder. There are also parents who are mourning the deaths of their children who passed away from malnutrition.”
Both sides in the ongoing conflict are accused of impeding aid deliveries, either through bureaucratic delays or through theft.
