Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt MP, Secretary of State for Health, spoke at our Future of primary care conference in September 2013.
He set out plans to focus on the care of frail older people over the next year, providing them with a named GP, who will be empowered to take responsibility for their care. These GPs will be able to make decisions about out-of-hours care and given the time to proactively contact people who don't present at a surgery.
He also announced an additional 2,000 GPs to be trained and a promise to look at the burdens placed on GPs and offer them support. Finally, he reinforced his promise to transform the NHS into a paperless organisation by 2018, introducing electronic health records and data sharing across organisational boundaries.
