Exploring the Holy Well of Santa Cristina | Nuragic Civilization Walking Tour
Join me as we explore the Holy Well of Santa Cristina, an ancient Nuragic sanctuary dating back to the 11th to 9th centuries BC. This stunning monument, built entirely from basalt stone, is a masterpiece of Nuragic architecture, often referred to as "Magistra Barbaritas"—the pinnacle of Nuragic civilization. The sanctuary is remarkably well-preserved and holds many secrets of its ancient past.
As we walk through this sacred site, we’ll explore its three main areas:
The Vestibule (Atrium): Here, votive offerings to the divinity were placed, welcoming visitors to the sanctuary.
The Stair Room: This beautiful room not only serves as an impressive aesthetic feature but also provides access to an underground sacred water source that fluctuated throughout the year.
The Tholos Room: This underground chamber, with its 2.5-meter-wide false cupola, was constructed with concentric beams that narrow towards the summit, ending in a 35 cm-wide light opening, 7 meters above. The chamber holds about 50 cm of water year-round, maintained through a modern drainage system.
The exterior of the temple, though simpler than the interior, still showcases artistic elements such as the keyhole-shaped banister and stone seats. The large elliptical structure, measuring 26 by 20 meters, encloses the entire sanctuary.
What makes the Holy Well of Santa Cristina truly unique is its astronomical orientation. During the equinoxes in March and September, sunlight directly illuminates the bottom of the well through the stair room, creating a breathtaking natural spectacle. This alignment demonstrates the advanced architectural skills of the Nuragic people.
Join me as we walk through the Holy Well of Santa Cristina and uncover the mysteries of this sacred Nuragic site.
