The Digital Innovation for Modernising the Independent Economy (DIME) is transforming township retail in South Africa. Launched by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in South Africa, in partnership with the City of Johannesburg and Wakanda NPC, DIME supports spaza shops to modernise through digital tools and secure payment systems.
DIME is a pioneering initiative designed to strengthen township retail through innovative solutions such as the Sphazamisa App. By integrating digital identity, food safety monitoring, and e-payment systems, the initiative empowers township entrepreneurs to transition from traditional trading to a modern, finance-ready business model.
