Today we have a look at one of my all time favourite watches, The JLC Reverso Ref. 3858520. Such a a classic. Spoiler alert - I really, really really like this watch. Let’s have a closer look together why that is.
The rectangular shaped stainless steel case is 45.6mm long and 27.4 wide. The thickness is around 9mm and the lug width is 20mm. The calibre powering this watch is the manual winding calibre 822/2. A total of 108 parts make up this movement which has a thickness of approximately 3mm. The movement hums along at 21600 vibrations per hour. With its single barrel it has a modest 42 hour power reserve. The dial is silvered grey and features an elaborate barleycorn guilloché finishing combined with vertical brushing and black transferred numerals. The heat blued hands add a splash of color to the silver dial. This is a time only watch with small seconds at 6 o clock.
Trivia: Did you know the case decoration, the three lines top and bottom are called Gadroons?

Origin Story: In 1930 a Swiss gentleman named César de Trey was travelling in India. De Trey was active in the watch business. During his travels in India, he was met with a particular request. British army officers stationed in India had taken up polo. It is this group that is said to have approached de Trey with the famous challenge. could he find a way to protect the glass and dial of their watches during matches. De Trey approached Jacques David LeCoultre to work on this project. LeCoultre would work on the movements. However, lacking the experience in case manufacturing, LeCoultre reached out to Jaeger to work on the case. Jaeger contracted engineer René-Alfred Chavot, who came up with the revolutionary case design.
