Che Guevara, the iconic revolutionary figure, met his end in the small village of La Higuera, Bolivia, on October 9, 1967. Captured by the Bolivian army the day before, Guevara was executed under orders from the Bolivian government, reportedly influenced by the CIA due to fears of his revolutionary activities spreading across Latin America.
In his final hours, Guevara was held in a small schoolhouse. Witnesses, including local teachers, soldiers, and villagers, later described him as calm, defiant, and composed. Despite his injuries, Guevara reportedly faced his captors with dignity, even chastising them for their lack of courage in carrying out the orders of foreign powers.
The execution was carried out by Sergeant Mario Terán, who later admitted he was deeply shaken and reluctant to kill Guevara. Guevara's final words are often quoted as:
*"Shoot, coward! You are only going to kill a man."*
After his death, his body was displayed publicly to confirm his demise. Photographs of his lifeless body, laid out on a stretcher, were eerily reminiscent of depictions of Christ, contributing to the mythologization of his image as a martyr for revolutionary causes.
