We live in polarized times. Tribal discourse can make us hesitant to express our views, for fear of repercussion. On the flip side, it can also make us less likely to listen to differing points of view. But this threatens to degrade what might be called the “epistemic commons”—i.e., our shared picture of the world. I argue that we have a duty to do our part to preserve the epistemic commons—and hence to share our ideas and engage with different points of view. Further, drawing on Aristotle, Mill, and Nietzsche, I contend that doing so is essential for human flourishing.
