Bendik Hofseth is a Norwegian saxophonist, composer, and vocalist who rose to international prominence in the mid‑1980s when he moved to New York and joined the jazz fusion group Steps Ahead, succeeding the legendary Michael Brecker. This bold step at the age of 24 marked the beginning of his global career, as he toured extensively with the ensemble and performed at major jazz festivals around the world.

Beyond his work with Steps Ahead, Hofseth has released several solo albums, including Colours (1997), Ludo (1997), Smilets Historie (1999), and Trunks (2020). His music blends modern jazz with fusion and Norwegian lyricism, often combining saxophone with vocals to create a distinctive sound. His compositions are carefully structured yet open to improvisation, reflecting both discipline and spontaneity.

Hofseth has also composed for film, theatre, and television, and written commissioned works for ensembles and orchestras. In addition to his artistic career, he has played a significant role as an educator and cultural leader. He serves as a professor of music at the University of Agder in Norway and has held leadership positions in organizations such as TONO (Norwegian copyright society) and NOPA (Norwegian Composers and Lyricists). Since 2007, he has chaired the International Council of Authors and Composers of Music (CIAM) under CISAC, advocating for artists’ rights worldwide.
