WWE's got belts on belts on belts, and is now teasing more championships. The promotion might be on the verge of new women's Intercontinental and United States Titles, and all this thirst for equality could lead to erosion, particularly when it comes to the value of holding a championship.

AEW is going through a similar problem. With all those belts they got, they've even added two women's titles since Forbidden Door after Mercedes won the NJPW Strong belt and Willow Nightingale won the vacated CMLL title from that treacherous Stephanie Vaquer. WWE is doing everything right in 2024, but are they about to regress by being tempted by the excess? Does more mean less when it comes to championship belts in WWE, and is WWE about to become the new AEW and the real-life Triple H belt meme?

Does WWE need another belt, let alone two? No, WWE doesn't need more belts. But if you look at what they've done with the belts they do have, just about every division has been revitalized by the strong booking of its champion. AEW stockpiles belts the way they stockpile free agents. There's no rhyme or reason, AEW does not have a plan for its titles or talent, so there's no identity attached to any of it. Tony Khan is the son of a billionaire. He gets what he wants, and spends on free agents and belts like they're collectible items. But like a collector, he just leaves most of them to rot on the shelf when a shiny new toy lists on eBay.

Sure, Kazuchika Okada is the Continental champion, but is there any nexus between the title and Okada? Do you sense any sort of pride from Okada that he has that particular belt, or is it just an accessory to match his robe? Why should I care about the International Title again? Didn't Will Ospreay just lose a world title match? Willingly, of course, such a hero. But now that he's defending one of AEW's silver medals, I'm posed to get hyped?

Why should I care that Jack Perry is TNT champion? With so many secondary titles that are not made to feel special through AEW’s booking, most of them feel like participation trophies. Mercedes Mone and Willow Nightingale are over AF, but does AEW need a third and a fourth women's title on its TV?

WWE doesn't have that problem. And, as much as I'm against them adding new belts, they've earned enough goodwill in the Paul Levesque Era to convince me that there's space for two valuable women's championship. Because even though WWE has a murderer’s row of championships, just about all of them serve a purpose. Just think about it for a second, The Intercontinental Championship is just coming off a 2-year reign with the greatest IC champion ever in GUNTHER. Now Sami is the IC champion and he's unbeatable. Almost too unbeatable because beating Bron Breakker clean is crazy. Cody Rhodes finished his story by winning the WWE Championship in the greatest WrestleMania main event ever. One that broke Roman Reigns' record-breaking reign of over 1,300 days.
