Advantages of using bio-based insulation in modern construction
With the Irish construction industry responsible for 37% of national emissions, the need for low-carbon, resource-efficient building solutions has never been more urgent. As the revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) will soon require the calculation and disclosure of a building’s embodied carbon from 2030 for all buildings and from 2028 for public buildings, understanding the carbon impact of our materials is essential.
Join Joe Fitzgerald (technical specification manager) for an informative Lunch & Learn session exploring how bio-based insulation can support future-ready construction. We will look at how these products made from rapidly renewable, carbon-storing biomass and recycled fibres such as jute offer long-lasting, healthy, and low-carbon alternatives to conventional insulation. Bio-based solutions not only reduce operational energy use but also address upfront carbon, contribute to a circular economy, and deliver thermal performance comparable to traditional materials.
We will also showcase the wide range of applications for bio-based insulation, whether made from grass, straw, woodfibre, hemp, or wool. From dense external board systems to roof and wall elements, and from loose-fill to blown-in products that eliminate gaps, these materials offer reliable, consistent thermal performance. Their additional benefits—low toxicity, moisture regulation, sound absorption, and protection from increasing external temperatures will be highlighted as key advantages in a warming climate.
Join Joe to learn how bio-based insulation can play a central role in achieving Ireland’s climate goals while improving building comfort, performance, and sustainability.
