Real foot doctor shows how to tell when to replace your running shoes, tennis shoes, basketball shoes and sneakers. This question come up a lot both in the comments as well as in my office because athletes want to know when their shoes have worn out but they also don't want to be spending money unnecessarily.

Because performance athletic shoes and sneaker serve such different purposes depending on the athlete using them and what sport they are playing - it is sometimes hard to tell when a shoe is worn out for a particular sport

So from outsole rubber to midsole foam to upper mesh, lets look at the 3 main ways to tell when your athletic shoes or sneakers ( tennis shoes , pickleball shoes, basketball shoes, running shoes, hiking shoes) need to be replaced and at what mileage or how how many kilometers does a shoe last before they are worn out and need thrown away.

The lifespan of an athletic shoe may surprise you as mot athletes think their shoes are more durable and will last longer than they do in practicality.

As a foot doctor I look at tennis shoes and tennis shoe technology a bit differently as I focus more on what foot types benefit from these shoes as well as the tennis, pickleball, basketball, running and hiking shoe's functional attributes

Be careful of products like shoe goo or shoe glue substitutes for performance footwear as running, hiking, basketball, tennis, pickleball and other performance athletic shoes and sneakers have a lot more demands on them than do traditional fashion sneakers or shoes so those types of shoe products cant give you the same performance as the original shoe and can set you up for foot injuries like heel pain, ankle sprains and hyperextension injuries.
