In 1974 BBC1 pioneered the very first fly on the wall reality TV documentary called The Family Produced by Paul Watson who go the idea while decorating his home and looking through the window at other homes wondering what their lives were like. The show featured the Wilkins family of Reading and was aired for 12 weeks. The show was an instant success with the British public and received mixed reviews although not all reviews were positive, it still went on to win an award for the best documentary of the decade and this is when an hours update of the lives of the Wilkins family was aired.
