Full presentation title: Families, Work, and Welfare States: How Family Formation Reshapes Household Income
In this presentation, Juliana de Castro Galvao (University of Oxford) explores how marriage and parenthood affect household income trajectories across six countries using longitudinal panel data. While women’s earnings consistently decline after childbirth, the impact on overall household income varies, ranging from stability in the U.S. and South Korea to significant declines in countries like Germany and the UK, largely influenced by national tax and transfer policies. The findings suggest that motherhood penalties, rather than marital or fatherhood effects, are the main drivers of these income shifts.
