On February 24–25, 2020, the iron ore carrier MV Stellar Banner ran into serious trouble off the coast of Brazil.
After departing Ponta da Madeira bound for China with nearly 300,000 tons of iron ore, the vessel deviated from its planned route and struck a shoal during outbound transit. The hull suffered significant damage, leading to flooding in multiple compartments.
Despite attempts to pump out seawater, flooding outpaced the ship’s systems. The captain made the decision to intentionally run the vessel aground in shallower waters to prevent a full sinking.
The crew of 20 was evacuated safely.
